The Rise and Fall of Microsoft Phones: What Went Wrong and What the Future Holds

Microsoft was once at the forefront of the mobile phone industry, with its Windows Phone operating system being touted as a serious contender against iOS and Android. However, after years of struggling to compete and declining market share, Microsoft effectively ended its phone ambitions in 2017 with the discontinuation of Windows 10 Mobile.

So, what went wrong and what can we expect from Microsoft in the mobile phone space going forward? Let's take a closer look.

Lack of App Ecosystem

One of the biggest challenges facing Microsoft phones was the lack of a robust app ecosystem. Developers were hesitant to invest time and resources into creating apps for an operating system with such a small market share, which led to a dearth of popular and essential apps. This led to a self-fulfilling cycle where users didn't see the value in the platform without their favorite apps, further pushing developers away.

Hardware Missteps

While Microsoft did release some innovative and well-designed phones, like the Lumia series, it also had some major hardware missteps. The launch of the Microsoft Kin in 2010 was a disaster, with the phone being pulled from the market just two months after release due to poor sales. Additionally, the company's acquisition of Nokia's mobile phone division for $7.2 billion in 2014 turned out to be a massive failure, with Microsoft ultimately writing off almost the entire cost of the deal.

Lack of Marketing and Branding

Another issue was lack of effective marketing and branding. Microsoft struggled to effectively communicate the benefits of its mobile phone offerings to consumers, leading to lackluster sales. Additionally, the company's more notable branding efforts, such as "Windows Phone" and "Windows 10 Mobile", were confusing and clunky, creating further barriers to adoption.

The Future of Microsoft Phones

So what now for Microsoft in the mobile phone space? While the company has made it clear that it has no plans to develop a new mobile operating system, it has hinted at a potential return to the market with a device running Android. The Surface Duo, a foldable Android device, is set to be released later in 2020, showcasing Microsoft's hardware and software expertise while running on one of the most popular operating systems in the world.

Time will tell if Microsoft can successfully pivot and regain relevance in the mobile phone space, but with a history of innovation and a strong brand, it's not impossible. For now, it seems that the era of Windows Phone has come to a close, but Microsoft's mobile ambitions may not be completely dead just yet
